The auction house Chayette & Cheval will soon organize a sale of ancient ceramics from the collection of Dr. Chompret. It will be held at the famous Drouot salesroom in Paris on 19 October.
Doctor J. Chompret was one of the main “leaders” in the faience world and was President of the Friends of the Musée National de la céramique in Sevres for twenty-five years. He published the Directory of French Faience, which remains the bible for all collectors. In 1943, he focused on Italian majolica on which he published a directory of Italian Majolica. He also collected Middle Eastern ceramics from Damascus and Isnik. The Musée National de la Céramique in Sevres received 280 pieces from Dr. Chompret.
The collection presented in this sale are the last pieces remaining in his family. In February 2000, his Ottoman ceramics were successfully dispersed. This sale will offer a selection of works from the main centres of Italian Renaissance of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Amongst the star lots of the auction is a a small goat with polychrome decoration and a large laurel wreath woven and pears, from Siena and is estimated between €20,000 and € 25,000. The sale will also include pieces of french faience as an oval sugar bowl from Aprey, estimated between €2,000 and € 2,500.
