Washington, 9 November 2011, Art Media Agency (AMA).
On 8 November, Christo offered the National Gallery of Art in Washington, two preliminary collages from his Over the River project (which he had worked in collaboration with his wife, Jeanne-Claude, who died in 2009).
The installation, which will cover the Arkansas River in Colorado, was finally approved — after being developed for two decades — by the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management earlier this week. Christo wishes to display silver panels over a 10 km long area of the river, selected by the artist, between Salida and Cañon City for two weeks in the summer of 2014.
The collages will be kept in the permanent collections of the National Gallery and are currently being presented along with two other pieces by Christo, also related to the Over the River installation, until 23 January 2012. In 2009, the Hermitage in Lausanne already presented over 200 drawings and preliminary collages in an exhibition on the development of the project, as well as maps, photographs, technical drawings and materials for the spectacular work.
