Francis Briest to remain president of Artcurial

At Artcurial’s general shareholders meeting last week, it was announced that Francis Briest would stay on as president for the next three years, the post he has occupied since the founding of the auction house in 2002. It was also decided that François Tajan is to remain co-president. According to the newspaper, Le quotidien de l’art, the expert Bruno Jaubert, the head of the department of impressionist and modern art, will become an associate director.

Artcurial is an auction company which was founded in 2002 by Nicolas Orlowski and Francis Briest. Hervé Poulain joined the company in 2003, with François Tajan joining in 2005. These are the company’s curator-auctioneers. Artcurial owns its own sales room, part of the Hôtel Marcel Dassault at 7 rond-point des Champs-Élysées in the heart of Paris. The company is composed of 21 departments, ranging from contemporary and modern art, to jewellery, to historic objects and ancient weapons.

The auctioneers marked itself out recently with some extremely good results at auction. It sold Jacques Majorelle work, entitled Le Kasbah rouge (1924) for €1,315818 (including fees) during a sale of Orientalist art in 2011. Another sale of note was that of a 1955 Alexander Calder entitled Pour Vila, which went for €2,287,800 (including fees).
