Beyeler Foundation presents “Pierre Bonnard” exhibition

Riehen, 8 February 2012, Art Media Agency (AMA).

The Beyeler Foundation is currently presenting the exhibition “Pierre Bonnard”, until 13 May 2012, which features around sixty works that honour the French painter.

Pierre Bonnard was born 3 October 1867 at Fontenay-aux Roses, Hauts-de-Seine, and died 23 January 1947 at Cannet, in the Alpes-Maritimes. Although the French artist is best known for his paintings rather than his other works, Bonnard was also an engraver, draughtsman and illustrator. This colourist belonged to Les Nabis — a group of Post-Impressionist avant-garde artists — of which Bonnard was the co-founder.

The eponymous exhibition presents approximately sixty paintings loaned by the some of the most famous museums and private collections. All periods of Bonnard’s life are revealed: from Paris to the Côte d’Azur, and Normandy. Marthe, his muse and wife, is depicted in a number of his paintings. Graceful still lifes, nude women in their intimacy, self-portraits and decorative landscapes were among the themes Bonnard used to express different colours as well as people in modern painting.

The Beyeler Foundation in Riehen is open daily — including Sundays and public holidays — from 10am to 6pm and Wednesdays from 10am to 8pm.
