Social Practice at California College of the Arts

San Francisco, 17 October 2013, Art Media Agency (AMA).

San Francisco’s California College of the Arts has opened a new Master of Fine Arts Programme, entitled “Social Practice”.

The programme moves away from a traditional, atelier-based approach, encouraging students to work in a more sociable manner. This form of study was conceived as a means of supporting artists whose production focuses on contemporary art as a phenomenon presented in public spaces.

Begun in 2005, this programme allows students to consider a range of ideas including aesthetics, politics, the economy, environmental ethics, decolonisation, collaboration and activism. The course is associated with public commissions for works, long term residency schemes, and institutions which promote collective activities, allowing students to acquire experience on a variety of complex projects, and to create both social and professional networks.

An information session on the new MFA is to be held on 6 November 2013 on campus.
