The Harry Ransom Center has acquired the archives of artist Ed Ruscha, including five personal journals containing notes and sketches, as well as photographs, contact sheets, and the planning material for several of his books, including “Twentysix Gasoline Stations” and his 2010 illustrated edition of Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road”.
The Harry Ransom Center is a museum and research library attached to the University of Texas in Austin. Materials acquired are to be catalogued, after which they will be available to students, researchers and the public.
Speaking on the donation, Ruscha said: “The thought that my working documentation could be in this magnificent repository is a wonderful honor and destination of great respect. I now see that the Ransom Center is the home to end all homes.”

Douglas Fogle, chief curator at Hammer Museum, presents an exhibition combining the work of photographer and painter Ed Ruscha with that of writer Jack Kerouac. “Ed Ruscha: On the Road” will be running until 2 October 2011.
The exhibition engages with the American landscapes and expanses described by Jack Kerouac and depicted by Ed Ruscha. Kerouac is considered the emblematic figure of the Beat Generation, a literary and artistic movement which has been a source of inspiration for Ed Ruscha. The artist contributed to the 2009 re-edition of On the Road, supported by Gagosian Gallery and publishing house Steidl. The photographs that supplement the book were taken, selected and assembled by Ed Ruscha himself.
Douglas Fogle wanted to draw the link between Kerouac’s words and for this reason, some of Ruscha’s images have been printed specially for the event.
The exhibition clearly reminds of “Ed Ruscha: Road Tested” hosted at the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth, which explored the artist’s fascination for cars via his own paintings, photos, drawings and films. Michael Auping, who curated the show, declared that Ruscha’s work has always been linked to travelling.
